In the United States of America, the fourth day of July is celebrated as Independence Day, the date on which the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Although primarily a list of grievances against the government of England under King George III, the Declaration of Independence contains one particularly remarkable paragraph, which begins thus:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

The very principles expounded in the Declaration of Independence are among Bahá'u'lláh's most important teachings. Are "all men created equal"? Of a certainty. Bahá'u'lláh proclaimed the same truth and made it a cornerstone of His teachings:

"The utterance of God is a lamp, whose light is these words: Ye are the fruits of one tree, and the leaves of one branch. Deal ye one with another with the utmost love and harmony, with friendliness and fellowship.

He Who is the Daystar of Truth beareth Me witness! So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth. The One true God, He Who knoweth all things, Himself testifieth to the truth of these words." (Epistle to the Son of the Wolf, p14)

Do governments have a duty to secure and protect the rights of their citizens? Absolutely. To the "kings of Christendom" He wrote:

"God hath committed into your hands the reins of the government of the people, that ye may rule with justice over them, safeguard the rights of the down-trodden, and punish the wrong-doers. If ye neglect the duty prescribed unto you by God in His Book, your names shall be numbered with those of the unjust in His sight."

And what of the optimism about human nature implicit in the principles of American democracy and demonstrated by the American experience?

"Upon the inmost reality of each and every created thing He hath shed the light of one of His names, and made it a recipient of the glory of one of His attributes. Upon the reality of man, however, He hath focused the radiance of all of His names and attributes, and made it a mirror of His own Self. Alone of all created things man hath been singled out for so great a favor, so enduring a bounty."

"The world is one country", Bahá'u'lláh asserts, "and mankind its citizens." The often-noted generosity of the American spirit is the generosity of the human spirit, and it is in keeping with the best traditions of America that we, its citizens, should share our good fortune with others around the world.

What then could be more patriotic than for an American who loves her country to love the whole world and to offer all of humanity the gifts of equality and unity?

I am not speaking of political acts here, but of spiritual acts. For the foundations of this nation are, whether we generally recognize it or not, spiritual ones. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that 'Abdu'l-Bahá said, during His travels through the United States in 1912,

"The American continent gives signs and evidences of very great advancement; its future is even more promising, for its influence and illumination are far-reaching, and it will lead all nations spiritually."
