13th Annual Human Rights Awards

The 13th annual Bahá’í Human Rights Awards, sponsored by the Bahá'í's of Ventura and Western Los Angeles Counties, will be held at the Embassy Suites, Mandalay Beach Resort in Oxnard on December 7.

The event honors both the 55th Anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, and also individuals who have made humanitarian contributions within their communities.

Receiving awards at this year’s Human Rights Awards Banquet will be Michael Ford, who became an attorney in retirement to help mentally disabled homeless people; Les Goldberg, who at the age of 85 helps homeless people with shelter and food; and Cardio Start, which uses doctors and other resources, some local, to provide surgical services to developing and war torn areas of the world, according to Bob Martin, event planner.

"The Bahá’í Human Rights Awards honor individuals who have contributed towards the advancement of human rights in Ventura and Western Los Angeles Counties" said Martin. "This is our way of commemorating the anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights."

"We are honored this year to have as our keynote speaker Kathleen Cross, published author, poet, educator, consultant and mother of three daughters." said Martin, of Simi Valley. Ms. Cross is the author of Skin Deep, an award winning novel published by Avon Books in 1999, and has another novel due to be released by HarperCollins in 2004, Schooling Carmen.

"The entertainment will feature the music of Colombian musician Leonor Dely, " announced Jill Lapple, event organizer from Fillmore. "Dely’s musical style reflects her diverse heritage and spirituality," Lapple continued, " and promises to bring additional excitement to this year’s event."

This year the awards banquet will be held at the Embassy Suites, Mandalay Beach Resort in Oxnard on December 7, beginning at 11:30 am. For event information or for reservations, call (805) 289-0455.
